A commemorative event was held at the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of Kazakhstan on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the tragedy of 20 January

A commemorative event was held at the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of Kazakhstan on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the tragedy of 20 January-National Mourning Day.

The event began with laying flowers in front of the bust of national leader Heydar Aliyev located at the Embassy, a minute of silence was observed to commemorate the souls of the martyrs, and the participants also laid flowers in front of the stand dedicated to the memory of the martyrs.

Ambassador A. Atamoglanov noted that January 20 is both a tragic and sad page in the history of the Azerbaijani people, as well as a page of heroism, courage, and pride. On that day, the Azerbaijani people gave their first martyrs for their freedom and independence, emphasizing that the unity of the people and the sense of national dignity triumphed over weapons. He drew attention to the fact that in the 1980s, during a period when so-called provocations such as the “Sumgayit events” were prepared and committed in order to justify the continuation of Armenia’s groundless territorial claims against Azerbaijan, as well as the mass deportation of Azerbaijanis from their historical homelands in the territories of present-day Armenia, the discriminatory policy of the former Soviet authorities against our country and our people led to the rise of the national liberation movement of the Azerbaijani people.

The Ambassador noted that despite the complexity of the period and the measures taken by the former Soviet authorities to prevent the spread of the truths of January 20, the issue of giving a full political and legal assessment of the bloody January 20 tragedy at the state level was resolved thanks to the National Leader Heydar Aliyev. The day after the tragedy - on January 21, Heydar Aliyev came to the permanent representation of Azerbaijan in Moscow and declared his solidarity with the people.

Notwithstanding the complexity of the particular period and the precautions taken by the former Soviet authorities to prevent the spread of the 20 January realities, immediately after the tragedy, bringing the brutal massacre to the attention of the international community is associated with the name of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev. Following the restoration of our independence and the return of the National Leader to power in our country, a number of crimes committed against our people, including the 20 January tragedy, were given a political and legal assessment, and in March 1994 a decision “On the tragic events committed in Baku on 20 January 1990” was adopted by the Milli Majlis (Parliament).

The Ambassador noted that the unity and will of our people, emerging from the most difficult days and the most difficult trials of history, formed the basis for the brilliant victory of the Glorious Azerbaijani Army led by the Victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief in the 44-day Patriotic War, which resulted in ensuring our territorial integrity, as well as the end of the occupation and conflict with the anti-terrorist operations that led to the full restoration of our sovereignty on September 19-20, 2023.

He informed about large-scale successful reforms that have been implemented in the social, economic, army-building and other spheres, and this work continues.

It was noted that the Glorious Azerbaijani Army, under the leadership of the President, the Victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, put an end to the 30-year longing of our people, and with the liberation of our lands from the Armenian occupation, new realities have emerged in the region. Now the tricolor flag of Azerbaijan is flying in the liberated territories.

At the exhibition organized within the framework of the event, the participants got acquainted with the photo exhibition reflecting the events of Black January.
